We got to sleep in this morning as breakfast was not served
until 8:30 AM. It was a really big Full
English breakfast with all the trimmings. However by the time it was served and we had
eaten it was past 9:30 AM. Outside it
was just pouring so what do we do? It
was a late start on what was a very hard day.
The ride was 75 miles (120 kms) down an unpaved path with 5750 ft (1750
m) of climb. The path was bound to muddy
and the Garmin profile showed a lot of really steep climb.
Jos had broken a tooth the other day and had been trying to
find a dentist to see him for the last few days and had been unsuccessful. Patrick had gotten some temporary tooth putty
stuff and packed it into the hole. I
think it helped but it was only a stop gap measure. Jos was keen to seek out a dentist and I can’t
say I blame him. It would have been my
top priority.
Looking at the brochures in the lobby of the guest house I
found a pamphlet for the Castle Skipton.
We hadn’t seen a Norman castle yet on this trip so it was decided we
would head over to see the castle while Jos phoned around to find a
dentist. The Skipton Castle was built in
1090 as a motte and baily castle and was extended over the years. By 1645 the castle had been was under siege
by Oliver Cromwell for three years and was the only castle in northern England
still loyal to the king. After the siege
failed Lady Anne Clifford ordered the castle rebuilt and a yew tree planted in
the court yard. The castle was rebuilt
and is now open to the public. By the
time Patrick and Agnes and I had finished touring the castle Jos had found a
dentist who could fit him in so we jumped back in the van and headed off to
make the appointment.
While in the van Patrick and I had a little nap. Agnes figured out the dental office was just
three doors from where we were staying.
At the top of the pass in to Penrith the rain was hammering down so hard
the wipers could hardly keep up and we were glad not to be on a muddy path.
In the end Jos got his tooth fixed and then we all went out
for steaks.
Tomorrow we are off to see Hadrian’s wall.
Terry
Hey Agnes, S here. Are you enjoying this trip? Sounds to me like the guys are on the ride from hell. More bad days than good - sure glad you all are from good old English stockπ Thoroughly enjoying your posts, Terry and pics are the greatest. Keep on truckin'!
ReplyDeleteTerry and Agnes - in Canada with Margaret and we are reading your posts - sounds like a good plan to skip the ride today. From your description it looked like a bloody mess. Glad Jos got his tooth fixed as that can be very painful. Stay dry and warm. Love the photos, especially the one of you nodding off. π
ReplyDeleteOff to Penticton today to do the Grand Fondo on Sunday. We are having lovely weather and pray for the same for you. Margaret and Patti and their regards. Be safe and here's to better weather. π΄π¨π¦π¨π¦
